Spring Tips for Plumbing

Spring Tips for Plumbing

Springtime gives you a great opportunity to start working on the home plumbing projects which have built up over the winter. Whether you need to conduct routine maintenance or want to start a new DIY project, now is the best time to start.

Easy Maintenance Projects You Need to Do This Spring

Do you want a couple of suggestions for getting started on your home's plumbing maintenance? Try these easy plumbing projects anyone can do!

Do you have a leaky toilet tank? When you are alone in your home and suddenly you hear the toilet upstairs flush, it can be a little spooky. But rather than calling the police, you might have to call your plumber instead. This phenomenon, known as phantom flushing, occurs when water leaks from your toilet tank and the float sinks down low enough to cause the toilet to flush. You can check whether your toilet tank is leaking by adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank. Return in 30 minutes and look in the toilet bowl. If you notice any color, then you have a leaky toilet tank. Don't worry! It is an easy DIY plumbing project even inexperienced homeowners can complete in an afternoon.

Double check your sump pump. A sump pump is the kind of thing you can easily forget about until you need it. But when you need it, it has to work perfectly, so it is worth spending your time to maintain it. The good news is that it is simple to test your sump pump. First, you need to find where the pump drains outside your home. Clear away any debris from the end of the pipe and then use a flashlight to check for any blockages inside the pipe. When you know the drainage pipe is clear, head inside to test the sump pump. Remove the sump crock lid and slowly pour a bucket of water into the sump pump. The pump should turn on and drain the water. You will want to wait a minute or two for the pump to turn off and then repeat with another bucket of water. If your sump pump fails to get rid of the water or doesn't turn off, call a plumber for a repair.
