Summer Plumbing Tips

Summer Plumbing Tips

When summer rolls around, you probably want to spend your time with the people you love by going on vacation or having family get-togethers. Your household plumbing is probably low on your list of worries, but don’t be lulled into thinking everything is fine without taking the time to tend to the basics first.  Follow these tips so you can enjoy the care-free days of summer.

Check your plumbing around trees.

Roots that grow into the system can wreak havoc and cause damage that can be costly to repair. A reputable plumbing service, like Amanda Plumbing Sewer & Drain can assess your system for you and alert you to potential problems before they become major issues.

Look for leaks or decreased water pressure around outside spigots.

Improperly drained lines may freeze during the winter leaving you with cracks or breaks in the line. Decreased pressure may indicate that water is leaking between the main water source and the location of your outside faucet. Start at the main water source and follow the line to the outside spigot to determine the location of a leak. Replacing or repairing the plumbing lines now will reduce energy costs and ensure everything is in good working order for summer. This is also a good time to attach your garden hose and check for leaks. Replacing gaskets now will save you time and frustration later.

Test your sump pump before heavy rains fall to make sure it is ready for action.

Repair or replace faulty pumps early so you won’t get caught scrambling for a new pump during a lengthy downpour.

Inspect your sprinkler system for leaks or damage.

Begin by visually inspecting the sprinkler heads and repairing or replacing any that are damaged. Clean the heads with a soft brush to remove dirt or debris. Slowly turn the system on one zone at a time and observe the water flow. If you cannot see water flow from one or more of the zones, you may have a broken pipe under the soil.

Clean your gutters.

Although your gutters don’t directly affect your plumbing, they do serve to keep water away from your foundation or from draining into your basement by directing water away from your home.

Examine your washer for leaks.

Summer fun puts a lot of strain on your washer with increased usage due to sweaty and muddy clothes or damp suits and towels from the pool. The midst of summer is no time for the washer to be down.

Turn down your water heater before going on vacation.

If your family is expected to be away for a week or more, you can turn it off completely to conserve energy and reduce your utility costs. Some hot waters have a vacation setting at the bottom of the tank.
